Batch cooking without five identical lunches

Meal preparation is easier to sustain when you cook a few building blocks and vary how you serve them. It keeps textures interesting and can reduce food waste.

What you need: Cooked rice or barley, roasted vegetables, lentils, dressing and suitable storage containers.

How to do it

  1. Cook one grain or potato base and one legume.
  2. Roast two different vegetables and keep the sauce in a separate container.
  3. Make a tahini bowl on day one, a wrap on day two and a soup with leftovers on day three.
  4. Cool food promptly, refrigerate and use within safe storage times for each ingredient; cooked rice needs particular care with cooling and storage.
Common mistake

Mixing everything with sauce days in advance makes many meals soggy.

Quick tip

Store creamy dressings and crisp toppings separately.
